I remember back in the day, when I posted on my blog at a fairly reasonable rate. And then I disappeared for a billion years, so NOW I am going to make another attempt to keep it up. Why not? At least I have a good excuse, and can just blame it on all of the time working on Archer takes up. So I'm starting up a new project, personal work. I used to do fashion illustrations, and thinking back, I remember those being the best few months I had, getting paid to make cute little fashion illustrations however I wanted. And then the client disappears without paying my last invoice. I guess it's gotta happen to all of us at some point.

Oh WELL, at least these drawings will still be fun, and I am my own client. Meaning I get to make them however I want. : )

Even though I spend every day in it, I never seem to get tired of my dear old Adobe Illustrator. Oh how I love you so.

(LACK) Of Races in The Last Airbender Film

I couldn't resist.

With the upcoming release date of the Last Airbender movie, I had to put in my two cents. I'm usually not one to blog about deep set emotional issues or politics of the matter, but I felt the need to share this one particular issue with the internets.

As some of you may or may not know, Nickelodeon hosted a brilliant, beautifully written and animated show called Avatar: The Last Airbender. It had a total of three seasons, and follow the "traditions" and culture of what would seem a primarily Asiatic setting. Words and such were written in chinese characters, clothing, mannerisms, all reminiscent of ancient China, Japan, etc. After season 3 and the end of the series, we were all left with wanting more, adults and kids alike. Then we got the good news of a live action adaptation film! It was great to hear, with the technology the way it is now, they could do unbelievable things with it. But! Remember, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually means it is.

Then we got the bad news that the project was taken under the wing of none other than M. Night-freakin-Shyamalan. Yea, that guy. The man responsible for The Village, The Happening, more like it. What a twist indeed.

And as if we were being insulted in the first place, the cast they pulled together for the film is like a huge loogie, right in the eye. And here is where I get to the meat and potatoes:

You have three white kids playing as the main roles, and an Indian-American playing the role of the main antagonist. Nothing against any of them, but when will Hollywood understand that the culture of a race of people is not decorated and hidden behind hair cuts, dark tans, and a few costumes? As an Asian-American myself, just hearing about the cast list hurts deep inside. I am sure that there are plenty of capable and talented actors among the Asian-Americans here, that they could manage to find to fit the roles of these characters. And for those that argue, "the characters are never stated as being Asian or from Asia," you are still wrong. No, they may have never come out in the show and said "Hey, I'm Aang. I'm a little Asian boy," we can all assume that the writing, names, clothing, culture, land, fighting styles come from a land not known as America, but from a culture across the world. (No people, Asia is not make believe land where all the people are either Chinese, Japanese, or "Oriental") My argument? Take Harry Potter's love interest, Cho Chang. How would that be, if she was cast as a white girl? J.K. Rowling never stated in the book that Cho was chinese. But even from just reading the name, we can gather that she is either Chinese, or Asian of some sort. What if everyone in Lord of the Rings was black? People would FREAK OUT. Yes, yes, they would. Did they ever state that they looked like white people? Nope, but its understood.

I may not be able to do much from my simple little art blog, and I may not be able to do much talking the issue with people (and getting laughed at about it at work), but the activist in me has stood up to do at least this much. I am telling the internets about this blatant disregard for a race of people, and I am refusing to go watch this film. No way will I support hate as obvious as this, no matter how much I love the show.

I'm a bit ADD and I can lose focus easily, but if you really would like to read more about the Asian Americans vs. Hollywood, you can go to racebending.com, they have a buttload more information than I do on the matter... here are some good points:

The following statements and actions have caused anger, disappointment and disgust to members of the community, many of whom would otherwise have been enthusiastic fans of the movie:

The initial casting breakdowns for the lead characters and the resultant all-Caucasian initial cast. The casting calls clearly indicated a preference for Caucasian actors to play the show's ethnically Asian characters, by using the wording "Caucasian or any other Ethnicity," rather than “Asian or any other Ethnicity” or even an unbiased “Any Ethnicity.”

The subsequent tokenism resulting from the casting of minority actors to play only supporting and antagonist characters, while all of the heroic lead characters remain Caucasian.

The inappropriate and offensive language used by various members of the production, including casting director DeeDee Ricketts’ repeated culturally ignorant statements (such as calling traditional clothing “costumes,” “If you're Korean, wear a kimono”) and actor Jackson Rathbone’s assertion that he will “get a tan” to look more like his ethnically Inupiat and Yupik character.

The casting decision to seek "authentic Asians"—a description Rickets gave to The Washington Post—to play background extras, when the very same "authentic Asians" were so blatantly discriminated against in the casting calls to play the lead characters.

The decision that the two most subjugated “Nations” in this Asian fantasy setting will be retrofitted from Shaolin and Tibetan Buddhist and Inupiat and Yupik ethnic peoples to be Caucasian peoples, even as the film continues to appropriate the franchise’s core Asian concepts, including a Hindi Avatar and the Four Buddhist Great Elements

Please, don't support Hollywood racism and don't support M. Night Shabadabadingdong.

World Of Imagination Vol. 3

So I've been getting some paintings ready for the APW Gallery show in New York called World of Imaginaion Vol. 3, and its been a pretty fun process. I haven't painted for the longest time, so it was like a brush up of old skills. I plan on doing 4 paintings, so I have 2 done, 2 to go.

I'm painting in gouache on canvas, and I will be spraying it to protect, but to keep the matte color. I didn't want them to shine.

Pictures are a little bad because I didn't have good lighting.

But I am super excited to go to New York for the gallery opening on March 5th. That's a friday I believe. If anyone is wanting to go to New York too, let me know!

Yay, new post with something new!

My latest project other than illustrating is diving head first into crocheting unbelievably cute creatures, and soon get good enough to come up with my own pattern!

This is my very first attempt, a jellyfish from a pattern from the amazing Ana Paula's blog.

Of course, I screwed up and was pulling from the wrong stitches...gimme a break, I'm new at this! But I still ended up with a super cute fat round jelly!

Old Airbrush Work

So...I was looking thru my old phone's camera, and found like all this old airbrush work from like a season ago, and one from this season.

So this is an old shirt Heather asked me to make her. It was supposed to be "epic." I just found it hilarious.

This was "bandage man." I painted him on a black bag that started out having the Joker Chris drew on it. But as I was painting the Joker, it looked worse and worse, so i just covered it with black, and painted it over.

And this was my "big" airbrush project for the '09 season. Every year, the artists paint a Marvel or DC character on a shirt just so we can practice doing more high end kind of work. I did Harley Quinn, from the old "Mad Love" cover. I was really pleased with the outcome. I haven't stretched this one over a canvas frame yet, but that will be done soon!

Hey Kiddos,

Once again, sorry for the super, extremely long break between posts, I've been a busy little bee lately. For starters, I graduated in September! Whoo! Congrats to me and my two buddies Heather Berry and Jason Barnes. We led the portfolio show, and even though it rained, and rained, and rained, we did our thing, and now we're big ol' adults in the big awesome world. Heather was right there next to me, all through our senior classes, and if it wasn't for her constant happiness and upbeat attitude, I would've hit rock (graduation) bottom. Thanks girl! Go check out her work, she is one heck of a 3D modeler and all around artist. She's going to Cali within the month of November, so look her up! Jason was right there next to her, and if it wasn't for his quick one liners and "stache," portfolio would've been a constant state of stress! Love you guys, and good luck from here on out!

Continuing on with portfolio, I won all three awards! Best in Show. Outstanding Academic Award. Outstanding Contributions to the Department. Whoo, that was one crazy week. We had set up, awards, and finally, the show.

So, here are images from a part from the Pre-Production part of my Portfolio:
They are space people, living in a world half-inspired by Duck Dodgers and the 24th 1/2 Century, and half-inspired by the Jetsons. I haven't posted the other part yet, but the buildings go down straight, not into ground, but into the ocean, where other aliens of the water and mer-people live, in a technological water world. It's weird, I know, but it makes sense when you see the drawings. Sort of. Its a cartoon, things like that happen.

Late Airbrush

I also haven't posted any airbrush work for sometime now, and forgot I had this one last painting. Chris's brother Nick wanted a Batman license plate around the time The Dark Knight came out, so at work I painted him one based off of the new Batman Begins logo.

This was my latest airbrush project that I did late summer of 2008.

I created the stencil and textured the paint for inside the bat. It was a little tricky at first, but really fun.

BTW, its a space world on top, and the buildings are set on poles that extend down into the ocean, which is another world full of mermaids and a different sort of technology.

You know, for the longest time, I've seen people tagged on their blogs, and I was just waiting to see when I was going to get tagged. Guess I'm "it" now, thanks to Luckie! Its all in good fun though.

The rules: I share 7 things about myself you don't already (possibly) know, and then I tag 7 others to do the same.

My name Thanh Chi has no real cool meaning like energy, spirit, whatever you guys are mixing up with those Chinese meanings. It simply means "cute, little girl", and yes guys, that's the meaning in Vietnamese. My momma named me.
I am a really big book worm. I read all of the Harry Potter books in 2 months, and that was in the middle of a busy quarter. Also, when I finish a book, if I like it, I'll re-read it again a couple of months later and still get excited and sucked into the storyline, regardless of the fact that I already know what's going to happen.
My grandparents wanted my parents to push me to be a doctor so I can be successful and comfortable financially ever since I started middle school. Thankfully, my parents pushed me to do whatever makes me happy, which is my art.
I'm a bit stubborn, so a lot of new things I try, I usually try to do figuring out on my own. Then when I get in more deep or get stuck, I finally do my full research and adapt my ways so it does work.
Technically, I am 5' 1" and a half.
I really do love skirts. I may be a tomboy at times, but there is definitely a girly girl in me.
I love to watch horror and zombie movies because I love the thrill I get from them.

For Visual Development, our project is to take an existing story, and just retell it - your version, your characters, your world. I have always loved the story "The Journey to the West" since I saw it as a little kid. I remember watching the old Chinese movies dubbed in Vietnamese of this story, and with this opportunity, I decided to go with the version I know and love, because while some people are familiar with the story, most aren't with the long movie version of it.

I'm still working on the character designs and don't have those scanned, but here is one background/landscape I'm working on for my story. I'm planning on either digitally painting or hand painting a version of it. Maybe both.

Whoo hoo! Okay, so super busy trying to get things ready in time for the art show on October 2nd. I've decided to put in my 3 main airbrush pieces, see if I can sell them. What's special about them now is that they are newly stretched over these 4 wooden pieces of wood. If you look at them, they look like canvases. They look amazing!! You gotta see it in person to really appreciate it. Shout out to my dog Chris for the great idea!

These pieces are my "cardboard paintings." I painted them with gouche inked them. They were a lot of fun to do. The reason they are little "gangsta" pieces is because the theme for the show is "80s Inspired." I don't really remember the 80s, but what I do know is bright colors!

Did this quick little background and color rough for the SIGGRAPH creation project. It's based off a story about a young man who has these special powers, and he can also control these two phoenix birds. Its a little strange, but I still like it regardless.

Since I haven't posted anything for so long, take this. Its a couples design on a black shirt. If anybody knows anything about painting with transparent paints on a black shirt, you'd know its a pain in the ass to get it to come out this vibrant. But I did. This one and only time when I actually gave a damn.

So, since school has finally let out for this crazy quarter, I've gone where? Straight into work. Can't complain though, need the money. The only thing that is driving me craaaazy is the HEAT! Feels like Vietnam out there.

So I've finally finished my Mystique. I'm pretty satisfied with it; it was just getting a little ridiculous on how much time I've not been spending on it, just to get the thing over with. So its fine with me.

This one has the added background effect, one step closer to being done.

And here is the complete, with touch-ups and stuff.
All in all, I really like it.

I've done a few crazy custom orders this year at the park, and people never seem to fail to give me something new.

So apparently, DK is a "homie" that is wrongfully locked up. I really think this would make a funny couples design.

Her name's Brooklynne, she likes diamonds, and wanted me to paint her a diamond.

This is her tattoo of a martini glass, and she wanted it on a license plate for her car.

I dunno, I don't think I like martinis enough to have them tatted up on me for life.
Car? Maybe. Body? No.

This lady named Sandy was sent this graphic through one of those MySpace comment things and asked if I could paint it for her. So I asked her to text it to my phone.

I really do like how this came out because it was completely freehanded. I didn't have a pencil in the shop, so I did it from scratch scratch. She in the end loved it, and actually went as far as calling the company number and left a message with the secretary saying how much she enjoyed working with me on the design, and how much she loved the shirt. I thought that was sweet.

The new caricature I have up was done by Chris! I love it!

Well, I do at least. Here's some updated images of my work on Mystique. At the rate I'm getting the chance to work on it between shirts people have ordered, looks like I'll finish it...quite some time from now. Oh well:

I got a chance to spend about maybe 30 mins to get this far on one Sunday.

This was about another 20 mins or so today.

I took this right after I laid down the base yellow before I start on the rest of the background and the touch ups.

That's about it for now.

I plan on going to Siggraph which is in LA this year, so that sounds like its gonna be frickin awesome! Ready for the quarter to end now though, its definitely been a long one.

So I had a pretty relaxing weekend, worked and then Sunday went to the school. That was fun. What wasn't fun, I spent the entire day by myself, surrounded by families and people there with their friends. It made me realize that I was very lonely, and having a seriously creepy stalker doesn't help much. For serious, it was sad; I ended up eating lunch by myself, left by myself, drew by myself. Mehh, whatever. I also did something this weekend I didn't think I had the guts to do myself. That was exciting hahaaha

I did some individual quick animal studies, playing around with the kraft paper I had. I had fun doing that at least. God, I'm such a nerd.

Elio didn't like them very much; I thought they were decent.

I couldn't get the rest of my gestures on here, seeing as how tiny my scanner is compared to my sketchbook.

Not much else going on really. I'm bummed I haven't had a chance to work on any illustrations for Bob's game, or work on any fashion illustrations either. Hopefully I'll be getting those chances soon.

I feel like hell and only got 16 hours of sleep this entire week, but I managed to get all my projects done, and on the upside, we're headin on over to the zoo this Sunday, so I'll be enjoying my first day off from work finally.

So here's the car, in all its glory. I definitely hate it. Ok, I don't hate it, it was just hell making it and getting it done on time. It still needs a lot of work, so I will probably be re-submitting it.

And now I can get some sleep.

This is a quick little ink sketch I did of Chucky the doll for Victoria. She's going to be creating it in Illustrator, so it should come out real nice. She had to do a spoof on a brand of some sort, so she decided to do "Chucky Cheese" instead of "Chuck E. Cheese." I came up with the tagline, "Where a kid can kill a kid," but her teacher won't let her use that. Apparently its too controversial.

Mystique? Mystique!

Yay! Okay, so I was finally able to get started on my brand new Mystique painting today at work. Well, technically, I got started Saturday, but that was just the line drawing. Me and Allen decided to move the season along by doing some pics of Marvel peoples and such, so check out his page as well for some pretty awesome airbrush work. He's currently working on the Joker.

So, here's my work in progress:

This is the line drawing I made from the original picture. Yes, I did trace it was a projector, but hey, better to get it on proportionately than ugly. Plus, tracing it on is much faster. And.... I still had to draw in the details and stuff myself. I trace it on for correct composition

And here is all the black in for the image. Everything else added on later will be color and white. I really like how its going so far!

Yeah, my camera phone REALLY sucks, so, um sorry bout that.

Mystique and Wonder Woman

With my laptop being rebooted recently, I thought I had lost all of my airbrush files. Luckily, I had backed them up at an earlier time, so they were all there. Yay!

Haven't been personally airbrushing outside of work lately, but I'm thinking about painting a new Mystique in a different pose from the first.

Sorry this one's only in halvsies. Didn't have my camera at the time.

But basically, these are the major steps I take when I do paint "special" pictures. Meaning those other than t-shirts that say "Spring Break 08" in bright pink and yellow.

If and when I do paint Mystique, I'll be sure to take more incremental photos as well.

So today I finally finished my Viking Longboat for modeling. Here's the render shots as well as the source photos I used.

I am beat! 3-D modeling takes a lot out of you. I'm currently in Intermediate 3-D modeling and we're using Maya. It's a pretty sick program if you know how to use it, so I will be getting snapshot renders of my Viking Longboat soon. That and some Flash animation I'm working on as well for this quarter.

I made this a loong time ago with a VERY old version of Photoshop.

I used this goat as a logo image for a website we had to choose and redo for a web design project. It's inked and colored with prisma markers.

Now this one I had fun with. My buddy Adam wanted a logo for his production company "Dick in Dirt Productions. Basically, its watch you think it is. Except for what the pervs out there are thinking. I liked how it came out, and he took this sketch because I never found anytime to actually ink and draw it properly. But he's graduated now, and makin money.

I created this cartoon called "Wacky Woon World" in my Writing for Animation class and came up with these two characters. There's more, but I just didn't have scans of them. It's based off of a theme park and is still very rough, but I'd like to keep going with it. Anywhoo, this is the bumper car that comes to life and is basically partnered up with this girl, Nena. These are just inked scans.

These were images we made in my Computer Illustration class. The cigarette butt was later used in a comp image, and the guy on the right is actually the label for a pretend beer company. I scanned them in and colored them with Illustrator.

I like her, she's one of my favs! This is my cartoon version of Nefertiti, and was my project for Art History 1. She is inked and colored with prisma markers on the wonderful marker paper.

These three images were made in my Character and Object Design class, which I looved! Here you have Rosie, Squanto, and Medusa; three seperate projects for the class. Rosie is made for traditional 2-D animation, Squanto is made for a video game, and Medusa was like an experiment with prisma markers and colored pencils, but the challenge was to make a human/animal character that was convincing on both parts.

These two images were created for two of my friends who had started a film company under the name of "It's Like Rope Films." Well, they started off strong, but now its dead. Sad. I really enjoyed doing the artwork for them. I love the logos I made for them though. "Mailbox Junkie" was the name of their first short film. Both were made in Illustrator.
